Installation of a 12 Volt Outlet

In order to provide power to my GPS, I  installed a 12 volt outlet on the bike. The outlet is available from Pepboys for around $8. It has an attached mounting bracket that allows this unit to be easily installed on the drivers side of the windshield, on one of the windshield bolts. I used the second bolt going down the left side of the 3 bolt support. This little lighter socket has a plastic snap cap on it to keep the water out when you are not using it, which was a nice touch. I also picked up a 5 amp mini fuse w/holder while at Pepboys for obvious reasons . I want to say the socket is made by Bell, the same people who make Bell helmets. Installation is pretty easy since you only have a lead and a ground to deal with. Below is a cheapo diagram of where things connect.  I always solder and shrink wrap all connections without exception as I don't believe in snap on connectors. Just a personal choice. I also sealed the bottom of the Cig outlet which numerous turns of electrical tape. I will probably go back and seal it in silicon and then wrap it in tape when it gets warmer outside. Keep mind that Bell also makes 2 and 3 outlet extension plugs so you can turn that single outlet in 3 of them....hummmmmmmm...perhaps a small Color TV next to the CB...muahahahah. Watch your current draws of course.

I made the wire long enough so that the fuse holder could be routed inside the backside of the headlight housing so it is out of the elements. It actually looks like it belongs on the bike which is just fine with me. Love it when a plan comes together.
