Other riders have
suggested the BMW Grips as an alternative solution. So I bought a set from MAX
BMW, in North Hampton, NH. I received them without incident and promptly
installed them. I ended up taking a box cutter and cutting off the stock grips
after wrestling with them for a few minutes and tossed them in the trash. When
installing the new grips, use some soapy warm, the hotter the better, to dunk
the BMW grips in before installing. They will slip right on for the most part.
The clutch side slipped right on however the throttle side required the use of a
thin bladed long screw driver to add in the install. The screw driver was
inserted under the grip and rotated in a circle between the throttle sleeve and
the grip to allow the grip to clear the plastic black cap at the end of the
throttle sleeve. It's not difficult, don't sweat it, just expect to put a little
English on the grip to get that one on. While the soapy water isn't dry, rotate
the grips so the seams don't show, well that is is your picky as I am.
Wait a bit before you ride and allow the moisture under the grips to dry
otherwise they will rotate and slip which is completely unsettling as well as
dangerous.
After note: The screw driver may
not be necessary as the black plastic end cap on the throttle sleeve does pop
right off.....duh.
Once they dried, they felt
solid. As you can see in the picture, they are a bit tapered and they are
slightly wider in circumference as well. They are roughly 1/2 in between the
width of the stock grip and the stock grip with a set of grip puppies. I am
pleased so far and I don't see my opinion changing. Cost will be between $17-$20
plus shipping for both grips.
