If you don't do anything else this
week, remember this web site above. It is the home of Frank, A.K.A.
Spencers Moto Care,
who is making a name for himself on the ST1300 Forums and with riders in general
by taking a stock seat, and with a little work, turning that lame stock seat
into a seat which is comparable to the higher dollar seats such as the Sergeant
and the Corbin brands.
When I first heard Spencer was
only asking for $50 to do a seat makeover, I sent him my seat and he turned it
around in a day and sent it back to me. $50??? what's there to lose? Try doing
that with a Russell order. Being that he was new to his craft, his earlier mods,
IMHO, for me, turned the stock 1 hour seat into a 2 hour seat. Past the 2 hour
mark I was eager to get off the bike. I had previously written this small review
on my site about it.
One final
option is this fellow from the ST Forum. Numerous people have sent them their
stock seats for modification and report excellent result for and equally
excellent price ($50.00) and short turn around time. The seat looks stock once
completed. I sent mine to him and I found that it turned my 1 hour stock seat
saddle time into perhaps a 2 hour seat. I am one of those people with no butt. I
have one but there isn't much to it and it is difficult to find a seat which I
can be comfortable on. I have found that for me, the harder and wider the set
is, the better off my comfort is. So Spencer's mod my be exactly what you need.
You will need to take a picture, from the side, of yourself sitting in your
natural riding position, on the bike, while trying to reveal as much of your
natural contours as possible without being naked.
He also modifies the aftermarket seats such as the Corbin and Sargent.
His name is

Ok so it wasn't
a glowing mention, but I didn't trash him. So time goes on and Spencer
sends me an email saying he wants another shot at my...er ah.... seat and wants
to see if we can improve my review of his seat. I am hesitant, thinking why
should I do this again and put more dollars in to a weak solution? So I call
him, we talk, he talks about the new materials he is using and says he will
cover the freight both ways and I agree. One more shot and then it will be time
for a Russell seat order. So the seat goes off to Spencer, I get the seat back
really fast, put it on, go for a 2 hour ride and all I can say is I am
impressed. Spencer has made drastic improvements in his modification process.
This mod is nothing like the first mod. He is now using different densities of
foam and is also adding gel inserts under the foam to boot. At the 2 hour mark,
the seat feels good and by butt is not aching. The seat is hot again and I will
paint the underside with that ceramic paint I mentioned
Heat
reduction ideas to
reduce the general heat which accumulates under the seat. Heat doesn't have
anything to do with the mod and is unrelated to my personal sore butt scenario.
Over the next weekend. I do a little 5 hour 220 mile ride around the hills out
here in TN. I notice I am not in pain from the seat design. Interesting. If the
wife's car battery hadn't died I was going to go for an 8 hour day on the seat.
So I can now
easily stay on the bike until I empty the tank. Damn fine!!! Well done Spencer.
This accomplishes my goal to go pump to pump.
Now the
question, If I had known about the 2nd generation of mods would I have bought
the Sargent seat? Hell no.
IMHO, Spencer's
seat mod turns the stock seat into a seat more suited to the original design of
the bike. It is a comfortable sporting seat with touring capabilities.
While the Sargent seat is wider, to me it is more of a clumsy seat and more
difficult to roll on the edges of the seat while planting the bike into a curve
while turning. I also can tell an improvement in slow speed maneuverability
as well as I am able to shift my weight around faster. Perhaps this also has
something to do with the increased comfort in Spencer's seat. I can move my butt
around, change angles and increase circulation easier on his mod as opposed to
the Sargent. In the event my butt can't hold up to a 12 hour ride, well I have
the Airhawk for emergencies. I guaranty this will be the best money you will
spend on a seat mod and I suggest you do it before you buy the Beadrider, the
sheepskin or the air bladder as you may find you just might not need them.
Like I say he
is making a name for himself out there with exceptional customer care and
quality craftsmanship. Check out his current prices and order sheet.
